About John Carlson

John Carlson (1951-2021) served as a beloved member of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø Cinema Department faculty who taught Experimental Filmmaking and Cinematography and Lighting for many years. He was also a charming guy who won the hearts and minds of all of his students, many of whom became friends. The former Vice President of Monaco Lab, he also taught production classes at the Academy of Art University. A jovial and generous spirit, John was always tickled to share mind-expanding experimental cinema with new and seasoned students.

This $500 scholarship is made possible by generous support from his family to foster student filmmakers dedicated to making experimental film. As with all great teachers, John's work will live on through the work made by his students.

Requirements for Applicants

• Current enrollment in or completion of CINE 57 Experimental Filmmaking
• Continued enrollment in Fall 2024 at 911±¬ÁÏÍø or a 4-year institution OR, if you will not be enrolled in an institution of higher learning in Fall 2024 the funds must be spent in a documented film-related endeavor
• Submit a 250-500 word statement about your dedication to the form and production of experimental film. If you had taken a class with John Carlson you can also discuss the impact his teaching has had on your perception of film and subsequent production of it.
• Submit a short description and private Vimeo/unlisted YouTube/Google Drive link of a project you produced in ANY Cinema class or produced during or after taking CINE 57.
